About Gulf Air

Gulf Air is a national airline of Bahrain, serving as the flag carrier for the country. It operates scheduled flights to over 60 destinations in the Middle East, Africa, Europe, and Asia. The airline's main hub is Bahrain International Airport

Gulf Air was founded in 1950 as Gulf Aviation Company. It became a fully state-owned entity in 1973, when it was re-christened Gulf Air. In 1991, the airline introduced jet aircraft to its fleet with the acquisition of two Airbus A320s. The airline went public in 1997, listed on the Bahrain Stock Exchange. In 1998, Gulf Air acquired rival carrier Libyan Arab Airlines, becoming the second largest airline in the region. In 2003, Gulf Air withdrew from Libyan Arab Airlines.

Since 2004, Gulf Air has been wholly owned by the Government of Bahrain through its investment arm Mumtalakat Holding Company. The airline underwent a major restructuring programme between 2004 and 2006, during which time its fleet was reduced from 33 to 18 aircraft and staff numbers were cut by around 30%. As a result of these measures, the airline returned to profitability in 2007.

Today, Gulf Air serves 60 destinations across four continents from its hub at Bahrain International Airport. The airline operates a fleet of 18 Airbus and Boeing aircraft including: six Airbus A320 Family aircraft, six Boeing 787 Dreamliners, three Airbus A330-200s and three Boeing 777-300ERs.
